TrueType Font Download Option

TrueType is a scalable font technology developed by Apple, Inc. TrueType fonts print at the full resolution offered by the printer. The print driver allows you to select and download TrueType fonts.

To download a TrueType font:

On the Advanced tab, click Driver.
Click TrueType Font Download Option. Select an option:
Note: Not all options listed are supported on all printers. Some options apply only to a specific printer model, configuration, operating system, or driver type.
- Automatic allows the driver to select and download the best TrueType format for the fonts in the job.
- Bitmap downloads the TrueType font as a bitmap font. This setting is best when any of the following apply:
  A bitmap is a non-scalable, rasterized font made up of numerous pixels combined to form each different character.
  - The font used in the job is one style and size.
  - The document uses point sizes of 14 points or less.
  - The font is used in combination with graphics, such as a logo.
  Note: Do not use this setting if different printer models are used to print the file. Bitmaps are not portable to printers with different resolutions.
- Download as TrueType downloads the TrueType font as a scalable, vector-based font. The font downloads to the printer in the same form that it appears onscreen. If your printer supports TrueType rendering, it is the best way to print TrueType fonts. If you are unable to print using the Bitmap setting due to a printer memory shortage, use this setting to resolve the issue.
- Download as Bitmap downloads the TrueType font as a bitmap font. A bitmap font is a non-scalable, rasterized font made up of numerous pixels combined to form each character. This setting is best when the print job font is one style and size, is 14 points or less, or is used with graphics. Do not use this setting for a print job on another printer. Bitmaps are not portable to printers with different resolutions.
- Native TrueType downloads the TrueType font as a scalable, vector-based font. TrueType rendering is the best way to print TrueType fonts. Selecting this option causes fonts to download to the printer in the same form in which they are displayed on the screen. Use this setting if you are unable to print due to a printer memory shortage when using the Outline or Bitmaps settings.

- Outline a scalable vector-based font that defines each character as a set of distinct objects such as lines, circles, and boxes. These distinct objects specify the shape and size of the character.
- Print as Graphics (None) downloads the TrueType font as a non-scalable graphic.
Click OK.
The driver automatically downloads smaller point sizes as bitmaps to reduce printing time and optimize memory usage. The printer deletes all downloaded fonts after printing the job.
