IPv6 Settings Help

This page enables you to configure IPv6 settings in the printer. The default settings for IPv6 enable the printer to be configured automatically by a router with regard to address assignment and use of DHCPv6. When you are satisfied with your selections, click Save Changes to keep the settings or Discard Changes to keep the previous settings.

Note: Changing the printer's TCP/IP settings may cause you to lose your connection to the printer. Saving changes to IP settings here overwrites existing IP settings stored in the printer. Contact your network administrator before changing TCP/IP settings.

For more information about TCP/IP settings, see:

General

TCP/IP v6 Enabled - Select this check box to enable IPv6. Both IPv4 and IPv6 can be enabled or made unavailable independently of each other. This check box is cleared (unchecked) by default. Changes to this setting become active after you save the changes, and then restart the printer.

Note: If you make both IPv4 and IPv6 unavailable you will lose your connection to the printer. If this occurs select Printer Setup > Connection Setup > Reset Connection Setup on the printer control panel to reset TCP/IP to the default settings.

Interface ID

Your IPv6 enabled printer has one interface with multiple addresses. The Interface ID is the part of the address after the prefix. The printer uses the Interface ID when assigning both the Link-Local address and automatic addresses that use router supplied prefix(es). It is not used in addresses supplied by DHCPv6. Link-Local addresses are used by nodes to communicate with other nodes on the same local network.

Use interface ID derived from MAC address - Select this radio button to automatically compute the ID from the MAC address associated with the interface. This is the default setting. The ID is different for each device. This setting is recommended.

Use this interface ID - Select this radio button to manually enter the Interface ID in the provided field. Interface ID must be 64 bits (8 bytes) in length, and must not contain special characters other than colons or valid hexadecimal digits (0 thru 9, a thru f, or A thru F).

Note: If you change the Interface ID you will be prompted to reset the printer before the changes take effect.

Self-Assigned Link-Local Address - The Link-Local address that the printer has assigned to itself displays in this field. A Link-Local address is not routable.

Automatic Address Assignment

Addresses can be assigned automatically when a router is found and it offers one or more prefixes. Automatically assigned addresses are routable. Each router supplied prefix is combined with the Interface ID to create an address. The router also provides the preferred and valid lifetime values.

Use router supplied prefixes - Select this check box to enable automatic router address assignment. This check box is selected by default. If this check box is cleared, the printer will not automatically assign itself addresses based on any advertised prefix.

DHCPv6

DHCPv6 is used to acquire IPv6 addresses of servers, and for dynamic assignment of IPv6 addresses to hosts (including printers).

Use DHCPv6 - Select from the following options:

  • As directed by the router - DHCPv6 is performed according to flag values in a router advertisement. This is the default setting.
  • Always, for all configuration options (stateful) - Stateful DHCPv6 is always attempted, and router flags related to how to perform DHCP are ignored. Configuration options and an IPv6 address will be accepted if DHCPv6 is successful.
  • Always, for all configuration options except address (stateless) - Stateless DHCPv6 is always attempted, and router flags related to how to perform DHCP will be ignored. Configuration options will be accepted if DHCPv6 is successful, but no IPv6 address will be assigned.
  • Never - DHCPv6 is not used even if directed to do so by a router.

DHCPv6 Assigned Address - If they exist, DHCPv6 Assigned Address and Lease Time information displays in this field.

Manual Address Assignment

A manually entered IPv6 address is used in addition to any other IPv6 addresses. If a manual IPv6 address is provided, it is preferred over DHCPv6, auto-assigned, and self-assigned addresses.

Use this address - To create a manual address, select this check box, and then enter the IPv6 address and prefix length in the fields provided. The default prefix length is 64.

Manual Address - If it exists, the manually entered IPv6 address displays in this field.

Address Precedence

Select to Prefer IPv6 or IPv4 addresses when both IPv6 and IPv4 addresses are available. The default setting is Prefer IPv6 addresses.
