Cleaning for jams and ink smears: paper-feed rollers
Approximate time to complete: 5 minutes

The paper-feed rollers carry the print media from the media tray and manual-feed slot through the printer. Occasionally, stray ink particles become attached to the paper-feed rollers, creating slick roller surfaces that cause media to feed improperly. Clean the upper and lower paper-feed rollers if either of the following conditions exist:

Refer to Using isopropyl alcohol for more information on proper cleaning procedures.

Caution: Hot surfaces exist behind the upper paper-feed rollers. To avoid personal injury during cleaning procedures, do not reach in behind these rollers.
  1. Open the front cover.

  2. Grasp the maintenance tray by the front edge and lift up while sliding it out of the printer. Keep the maintenance tray upright.

Note: Once the maintenance tray has been partially used, it leaks drum fluid if tipped. Contact with the drum fluid poses no known health risk; refer to
MSDS for silicone oil (drum fluid) for more information.
  3. Locate the two sets of upper paper-feed rollers above the maintenance tray: One set of rollers is black rubber; the other set is white plastic. Turning the lower rubber rollers also turns the upper rollers.

  4. To clean the upper black rubber rollers:

    1. Use either the prepackaged alcohol-soaked cloth, or fold a lint-free cloth into a 2-inch square and soak with alcohol. Keep the cloth moist with alcohol during the procedure.

    2. Place the cleaning cloth against the underside of each upper rubber roller, lifting to create pressure against the roller.

    3. Press the index or middle finger of your other hand flat against a lower roller and turn the roller toward you using the entire length of your finger. The upper rubber roller should rotate four or five complete revolutions to ensure proper cleaning.

    4. Scrub each roller thoroughly. If the cloth becomes dirty, discard it and use another.

  5. To clean the upper white plastic rollers:

    1. Use alcohol-soaked swabs for this procedure.

    2. Place the swab on top of each upper white roller and press down on the swab to create pressure against the roller.

    3. Rotate the upper white roller four or five complete revolutions by turning the lower black rubber rollers away from you with the index finger of your other hand.

    4. Scrub each roller thoroughly until clean. If the swab becomes dirty, discard it and use another.

  6. Locate the two sets of lower paper-feed rollers: one set of rollers is black rubber; the other set is white plastic. The lower rubber rollers are located below the maintenance tray; the white plastic rollers are located on the inside of the front cover.

  7. To clean the lower rubber paper-feed rollers:

    1. Use either the prepackaged alcohol-soaked cloth or fold a lint-free cloth into a 2-inch square and soak with alcohol.

    2. Place and hold the cleaning cloth on top of each lower rubber roller, pressing to create pressure against the roller.

    3. Press the index or middle finger of your other hand flat against a lower roller and turn the roller using the entire length of your finger. The lower rubber roller should rotate four or five complete revolutions to ensure proper cleaning.

    4. Scrub each roller thoroughly. If the cloth becomes dirty, discard it and use another.

  8. To clean the lower white plastic rollers:

    1. Use either the prepackaged alcohol-soaked cloth or fold a lint-free cloth into a 2-inch square and soak with alcohol.

    2. Place and hold the cleaning cloth on top of each lower white roller while turning the individual roller with your thumb and forefinger.

    3. Scrub each roller thoroughly until clean. If the cloth becomes dirty, discard it and use another.

  9. Put the maintenance tray back in the printer, pushing on both sides of the maintenance tray to latch it firmly in place.

  10. Close the front cover.

If the problem persists: Refer to Cleaning for ink smears: paper-exit path.
