PhaserShare

NetWare 4.1 configuration (NDS mode)

Note: The PhaserShare Administrator (versions 3.1 and above) supports NetWare 4.1 with NetWare Directory Services (NDS).

Print the configuration page

Your printer's configuration page reports information that you need for NetWare configuration. For information on printing a configuration page, see Your printer's configuration page.

Microsoft Windows environments

Network configuration

Note: This procedure describes NetWare 4.1 configuration using the NWAdmin utility. You can also perform network configuration using PCONSOLE; refer to
Network configuration (PCONSOLE Quick Setup). If you are running the printer in bindery emulation mode, use PCONSOLE to configure the network.
  1. Log in to the network as ADMIN and open the NWAdmin utility.

  2. Create a queue object and add the correct queue users.

  3. Create a printer object, and add the queue just created to the list of queues through the Assignments option.

  4. Create a print server object; the print server name must match the print server name of the printer being used (note the name on the configuration page). Add the printer to the list of printers through the Assignments option.

Printer configuration

  1. Make sure that the PhaserShare Administrator is installed (for information, see Installation). Version 3.1 of the PhaserShare Administrator supports NetWare 4.1.

  2. Start the PhaserShare Administrator by double-clicking on the PhaserShare Administrator icon. Refer to your Windows documentation for complete information on how to start applications. The Main window is displayed.

  3. In the Main window, select the printer (print server) in the Printer List.

  4. Display the Protocol Settings dialog box.

    1. In the Main window, click the Configure Printer button; this displays the Configure Printer dialog box.

    2. In the Configure Printer dialog box, click the Ethernet tab; this displays the Ethernet tab.

    3. In the Ethernet tab, click the Protocol Settings button; this displays the Protocol Settings dialog box.

  5. In the Protocol Settings dialog box, the Print Server tab is always displayed on top. Make the following settings in the Print Server tab:

    1. Enter the name of the directory services tree to be used in the DSTree field. This name must be the tree that was used when setting up the queue, printer, and print server with the NWAmin utility.

Note: For information about identifying the directory services tree and context, see
Identifying the directory services tree and context.
    2. Make sure that the Enable NDS box is checked.

    3. In the DS Context field, enter the location in the directory services tree where the print server resides. This field contains the path to the container object that holds the leaf object of the print server that the printer will connect to. In the example screen shot shown, the print server TEK026E6F is contained in the Steve.OU container object under the Eng branch and the CPID branch of the TEK_WV directory services tree. The DSContext field is optional if the print server name is unique in the specified directory services tree. The value entered must match the location selected using the NWAdmin utility.

  6. Close the PhaserShare Administrator.

DOS and other environments

Network configuration (PCONSOLE Quick Setup)

  1. Log in with supervisor privileges.

  2. Enter PCONSOLE by typing:

    PCONSOLE

  3. From the Available Options menu, select Quick Setup. The Print Services Quick Setup template is displayed, with default values assigned.

  4. If desired, change the print server name, printer name, print queue name, or print queue volume.

  5. Press F10 to save the setup and return to the Available Options Menu.

  6. Press Escape to exit PCONSOLE.

Printer configuration

In DOS environments and other non-Windows environments, you can use the file NDSON.PS to configure the printer for NetWare 4.1 networks. The file is included with your printer's network utilities software. Copy the file to your hard disk before you begin printer configuration.

Note: The PostScript code contained in the file NDSON.PS is also available in a Macintosh version. The file name is Enable NDS.
To configure your printer for NetWare 4.1 from a PC using the file NDSON.PS, you must edit the file and send it to the printer. When you edit the file, you need to supply the following information:

The comments in the file provide more information.

  1. To use the file NDSON.PS, first open the file using any text editor. Make the appropriate changes to the file according to the instructions contained in the file.

  2. Send the file to the printer by any convenient method. Since the printer is not yet set up for NetWare operation, you cannot send the file to the printer over a NetWare connection; use a parallel, EtherTalk, TokenTalk, LPR, or AppSocket connection.

If you send the file to the printer over a parallel connection, you must add Control-D characters to the beginning and end of the file. You can use the batch file ADDCTRLD.BAT in the NET-UTIL directory to do this. The files ADDCTRLD.BAT, CTRLD.PS, and NDSON.PS must all be in the same directory.

  1. Copy the files to your hard disk.

  2. To use ADDCTRLD.BAT to add Control-D's to the file NDSON.PS, type the following command:

    ADDCTRLD NDSON.PS

  3. After you send the file to the printer, you must reset the printer before the configuration will take effect. For more information about resetting the printer, see Resetting your printer.

Passwords

If a password is used in NDS mode, it must also be set on the printer with the PhaserShare Administrator and on the file server with the NWAdmin utility or PCONSOLE.

Notify lists

Use the PhaserShare Administrator to set up notify lists on NetWare 3.12 servers. On NetWare 4.1, use the NWAdmin utility to setup the notify list for a printer.

Support for bindery reference queues

The print server name and password on the bindery server must be the same as directory services names.
