Q:
Can I recycle the old Maintenance Kit when I replace it with a new one?
A: Xerox
provides a Waste-to-Energy
program -- a free service which safely and efficiently recovers valuable
energy from used Xerox color printer supplies. Check the Eligible
Items information to determine which consumable supplies are covered
for your specific printer model.
Q:
How do I use my printer as a color copier? Which scanners can I use?
A: By attaching
a supported scanner to your Phaser® 840 color printer,
you can use the printer as a color copier. The following scanners are
supported by the Phaser 840 color printer:
Manufacturer |
Model |
ADF* Support |
Hewlett-Packard |
HP ScanJet 6100C |
Yes |
Hewlett-Packard |
HP ScanJet 6200C |

Contact your local
reseller for availability.
Please note:
- In general, only
the models listed above will work. If a different scanner model made
by either Hewlett-Packard or Microtek supports the identical command
set, byte order, and color characteristics of one of the listed scanners,
it may work. Scanners from other manufacturers will not work.
- To attach the
scanner to your printer, you need a high-density SCSI-2 to 50-pin SCSI-1
interconnect cable (Xerox part number 013-0297-00). See Connecting
Peripheral Devices.
- The Phaser 840
printer does not support the Xerox Phaser Copystation. Use the Phaser
Copystation only with the following Xerox products: Phaser 540,
550, 560, 340, 350, 380, and 600 color printers.

Q:
Does the Phaser 840 printer support DHCP?
A: Yes, the
Phaser 840 printer does support DHCP. This allows network plug and play
for Windows NT systems. For additional information on the use of DHCP,
refer to the Microsoft Windows NT manuals.
Q:
Does the Phaser 840 printer support 100BaseT networks?
A:Yes, the
optional PhaserShare card has support for 100BaseT Ethernet environments.
When this card installed, the built-in 10BaseT connection is disabled.
Q:
I just bought my Phaser® 840 Color Printer a couple of
days ago and have only printed 50 pages or so. Now the printer's front
panel says it's Out Of Ink. How could I have used up so much ink
this quickly?
A: Most likely
the printer has been turned off and on a couple of times and has already
consumed the ink sticks that were loaded in the printer. The printer is
shipped with one ColorStix® ink stick of each color. This
is enough ink to power up and print many pages.
At power-up, the printer
cleans (or purges) each of its ink jets to ensure optimum image quality.
This action takes around 15 minutes and uses some of each color-ink stick.
Leaving the printer on, even during weekends, actually reduces ink consumption.
The printer also has a built-in standby mode to reduce power consumption
during periods of inactivity. If the printer hasn't been used in four
hours, it drops into the standby mode. When a print job does arrive, the
printer wakes up and handles the print request without unnecessarily purging
ink.
Q:
How do I set up print queues on my UNIX® host?
A: The printer's
internal LPR queue uses the BSD protocol; you must use one of the following
names for the remote printer queue:
- PS for PostScript®.
- HPGL for HP-GL®
(Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language).
- PCL for PCL®
(Printer Control Language).
- AUTO for Automatic
language selection (the printer automatically senses the language of
the print job and processes it accordingly).
If you want to print
using Xerox®
PhaserPrintTM 2.0 software, you must use PhaserPrint to configure your host. Refer
to the PhaserPrint 2.0 user manual or the instructions provided with the
PhaserPrint CD-ROM for configuration information.
If you are not using
PhaserPrint, follow these instructions:
- For SPARC®
and SGI® platforms, modify the etc/hosts file
to identify the printer to the workstation and modify the /etc/printcap
file to describe the printer to the workstation. For more information,
refer to Spooling configuration
for SPARCstation platforms (24K PDF ) or Spooling configuration
for SGI platforms (24K PDF
).
- For Hewlett-Packard
platforms, use the Hewlett-Packard System Administrator Manager (SAM).
For more information, refer to Spooling configuration
for HP platforms (24K PDF
).
- For IBM RS/6000TM
platforms, use the IBM System Management program smit. For more
information, refer to Spooling configuration
for IBM RS/6000 platforms (24K PDF
).
- For BSD hosts not
listed here, refer to Sample spooler
configuration for a typical BSD system (18K PDF
).
- For System V hosts,
configure the queue as a remote BSD print queue (support for TCP/IP
lpr is required).
Q:
Why don't the printed colors match the screen colors?
A: Monitors
use an additive RGB color model to generate colors, and printers use a
subtractive CMYK model to generate colors. Because monitors and printers
use different color-generation models, color matching between the two
is difficult.
In many cases, RGB-monitor
colors are outside the range of colors possible on CMYK printers. This
causes, for example, blues to be brighter on the screen than on the printed
page.
TekColorTM
has two monitor simulations: Simulate Display and Vivid Color/Blue. These
color corrections use two different algorithms to solve this color-mapping
problem. Print the RGB Sampler file from the printer's front panel.
This file is a chart that gives a good representation of the colors possible
on the printer. This chart gives RGB-percentage values with each color
printed, which you can use with almost any software application to remove
the guesswork between matching RGB-monitor colors and the CMYK-printer
colors.
Q:
How do I enter the TCP/IP address in the Phaser® 840 Color
Printer?
A: You can
set the IP Address, NetworkMask, and the Gateway Address from the Phaser

Q:
How do I install my printer on a Windows® NT server?
A: Use the
following links to install the Windows NT
3.51 PostScript® driver or the Windows NT
4.0 PostScript® driver.
Q:
What is the best way to clear and prevent paper jams?
A: Follow
these instructions for removing a paper jam. Often you
can prevent paper jams by following the recommended media weight guidelines.
If the jam persists, try cleaning the printer.
Q:
The printer is displaying a message telling me that the Maintenance Kit
is low/empty. How can I clear this message?
A: The Maintenance
Kit that ships with a new printer has a life of 10,000 prints. Replacement
Maintenance Kits have a life of 30,000 prints. A front panel message tells
you when the kit is low, allowing you to make a minimal number of prints
before the tray is depleted. The front panel also indicates when the kit
is empty. You must install a new Maintenance Kit to continue printing.
To order a Maintenance
Kit, use the Xerox order number, 016-1727-00. Avoid printing delays
by keeping an extra stock of Maintenance Kit available.
Q:
Does the Phaser 840 Color Printer support duplex printing?
A: Yes, the
Phaser 840 Color Printer supports a new option called Auto Duplex. This
feature lets you print two-sided documents without the need to manually
reorient paper in the media tray or manual feeder.
Q:
Will my Phaser 840 Color Printer work with a scanner?
A: Yes. In
fact the Phaser 840 Color Printer works with a variety of SCSI-compatible,
third party scanners.
Q:
Why does my document feed through the printer as if it is printing on
two sides, yet I only want a one-sided print?
A: You have
the duplex printing option turned on in the printer driver. When this
option is on, even single-page documents print as if they are two-sided
documents. To turn this option off, set the duplex (2-sided) printing
option to "None" in the printer driver.
