Spooler configuration for IBM RS/6000 platforms
Use the IBM System Management program smit to configure an IBM RS/6000 workstation.

  1. Log in as root.

  2. From the command line, type: smit

  3. Select Communications Applications and Services from the menu.

  4. Select TCP/IP.

  5. Select Further Configuration.

  6. Select Name Resolution.

  7. Select Hosts Table (/etc/hosts).

  8. Select Add a Host.

  9. Fill in the fields. See the following table for example entries and descriptions.

    Field name Example entry Description
    Internet Address

    134.62.33.138

    Enter the IP address of the printer.

    Host Name

    phaser480

    Enter the same name as the Destination host for remote jobs and the Name of device to add later in this procedure.

    Alias(es)

    -

    Optional. You can specify alternate names for the printer here. This is not the same as the queue name.

    Comment

    -

    Optional.

  10. Press Enter.

  11. Press F3 three times to move to the Further Configuration menu.

  12. Select Remote Printer Subsystem.

  13. Select Client Services.

  14. Select Remote Printer Queues.

  15. Select Add a Remote Queue.

  16. Fill in the fields. See the following table for example entries and descriptions. Move from field to field by pressing the arrow keys. When you have finished making changes, press Enter.

    Name of queue to add

    The name you use to access the printer. You can use any name you want; for example, colorprinter.

    Pathname of the short form filter for queue
    status output

    /usr/lpd/bsdshort This filter converts print jobs to the BSD lpr spooler.

    Pathname of the long form filter for queue
    status output

    /usr/lpd/bsdlong This filter also converts print jobs to the BSD lpr spooler.

    Name of queue on remote printer

    The queue name that the printer recognizes. Valid entries are:

    PS for PostScript

    PCL for text

    HPGL for HP7475A

    AUTO for automatic selection.

    Name of device to add

    Backend program pathname

    /usr/lpd/rembak

  17. When you are satisfied with your entries, press Enter.
