Fabric Transfer Instructions
|
- Note
- To use transfer media requires a separately purchased heat press (also
available at many Kinko's locations.)
Fabric
- Trim away the excess fabric transfer media, leaving a small border with rounded corners (to avoid later tearing) around the image.
- Position the garment on the lower platen of the heat press. Prepress approximately 3-5 seconds to release moisture from the fabric (repeat until there's no steam). This is especially important if the garment is 100-percent cotton.
- Place the trimmed fabric transfer image face down onto the garment in the desired position. Press the image onto the garment using proper press time and temperature settings; refer to the Fabric/Press Settings table.
- Note
-
When transferring onto both sides of a garment, be sure to place plain paper between the image and the heat press's lower platen.
- Let the transfer set for 3-5 seconds before removing the paper backing. Pinch the corners and peel the paper backing slowly across the heat press's lower platen using a constant speed. Do not pull straight up. If the paper backing starts to tear, stop immediately, cover the entire transfer with plain paper, and repeat Steps 3 and 4.
To minimize image color loss on garments after washing:
- Prepress the garment to remove excess moisture.
- Use the correct temperature and time settings for the fabric you are using. See the Fabric/Press Settings table.
- Iron the image after washing to enhance colors.

Mouse Pads and Coasters
- Set the press for 375 deg. F (200 deg. C).
- Make sure that the transfer image is larger than the mouse pad by approximately .635 - 1.25 centimeters (1/4 - 1/2 inches). Trim away any excess fabric transfer media, leaving a small border with rounded corners (to avoid later tearing) around the image.
- Place the mouse pad on the heat press platen with the white fabric side facing upward. Be sure to have plain paper underneath the mouse pad to protect the rubber mat.
- Press the transfer onto the mouse pad for eight seconds.
- Open the press and immediately peel off the paper by pulling it back across the lower platen. Do not pull straight up. Use a cloth to hold the mouse pad as you peel.
Three-Ring Binder/Portfolio/Album Cover
- Set the press for 375 deg. F (200 deg. C).
- Place the binder onto the heat press platen. The side to be imprinted should be facing upward. Position the binder so that the metal rings will not contact the heating element when pressing. If positioned correctly, it is possible to imprint on the binder's front cover as well as the spine.
- Place the transfer media face down (image side down) on the binder in the desired position. Cover the binder and transfer with plain paper to protect the binder.
- Press the transfer onto the binder for 15 seconds.
- Open the press and immediately peel off the paper by pulling it back across the lower platen. Do not pull straight up. Use a cloth to hold the cover down as you peel.
Mugs
- Set the press for 325 deg. F (170 deg. C) and regular pressure.
- The image to be transferred should be no larger than the heating element. Trim away the excess on the fabric transfer media, leaving a 0.635-centimeter (1/4-inch) border with rounded corners (to avoid later tearing) around the image.
- Heat resistant tape can be used to center and hold the transfer onto the mug surface. Make sure you place the tape on the 0.635 centimeter (1/4-inch) white border so it is not overlapping the color image.
- Place the mug in the mug press and set the timer for 90 seconds.
- Release the handle and take the mug out of the press. Allow the mug to cool for at least 30 minutes. For faster cooling, fully immerse the mug in cool water for 5-10 minutes.
- Peel off the paper. If you have a problem with peeling, spray the transfer backing paper with isopropyl alcohol.
- To make the mug more scratch resistant, place it on the upper rack of a dishwasher and wash it on the normal setting for a full cycle. You can also bake it in a 178 - 206 deg. C (350 - 400 deg. F) conventional oven for five minutes. The mugs are now dishwasher and microwave safe.
Puzzles
- Set the press for 375 deg. F (200 deg. C).
- After ensuring that the image is larger than the puzzle, place the puzzle with the cardboard backing on top of the heat press platen. The white fabric side should be facing upward.
- Prepress the puzzle for approximately five seconds. Press the transfer onto the puzzle for 20 seconds.
- Open the press and immediately peel off the paper by pulling it across the lower platen. Do not pull straight up. To keep the puzzle together, use a cloth to hold the puzzle down as you peel.
Clocks
- Set the press for 375 deg. F (200 deg. C).
- After ensuring that the image is larger than the clock disk, place the clock disk with the white fabric side facing upward.
- Prepress the clock disk for approximately five seconds. Press the transfer onto the clock disk for five seconds. Open the press and immediately peel off the paper by pulling it across the lower platen.
Do not pull straight up.
